Can Erectile Dysfunction Indicate Heart Disease?

Posted on April 24, 2013 by Cosme Gomez

There are plenty of embarrassing health problems, but for most guys, erectile dysfunction takes the cake. The inability to get or maintain an erection is a pretty common problem for men who are reaching the later stages of “middle aged”. The physical issue is a lack of blood flow to the penis, but there are many different factors which can lead to this issue. The most common being cardiovascular problems and diabetes. It’s not uncommon for men to visit a urologist in Miami, FL when they are having a problem with erectile dysfunction. This is because the study of male health, andrology, is a sub-field of urology. The best urologists, like those at Urology Specialty Care, have plenty of experience when it comes to diagnosing and treating erectile dysfunction.

Heart disease and erectile dysfunction may seem unrelated, but in reality the two are very much intertwined. A large percentage of men who suffer from erectile dysfunction also suffer from something called atherosclerosis, which is the hardening of a person’s arteries because of a buildup of plaque. It should be no surprise the small arteries are the first to clog and the arteries in the penis are some of the smallest in the body. Atherosclerosis is caused by a variety of different factors such as poor diet, a lack of exercise and smoking. There are even some studies which suggest psychological factors like stress and depression can also play a role in clogging arteries. Usually doctors will examine larger arteries leading to the heart in order to make a diagnosis.

The most common way to treat erectile dysfunction, other than making positive lifestyle changes, is to take certain drugs which improve blood flow.  However, men who take nitrates for the heart should not take erectile dysfunction medication because it may cause a serious drop in blood pressure. If you’re concerned that erectile dysfunction could be an indicator of much more serious heart problems, then the best thing to do is contact a urologist in Miami, FL like those at Urology Specialty Care. Erectile dysfunction is generally diagnosed using a combination of a physical examination, a review of the patient’s medical history and a blood test or two. A urologist will be able to help you not only treat erectile dysfunction, but also help make certain lifestyle changes which could be contributing to the problem. Putting the problem off can actually make it worse over time, so visit a urologist today and don’t’ let erectile dysfunction get in the way of your life.

Advancements in Urological Care

Posted on April 10, 2013 by Cosme Gomez

There’s no denying that technology makes our lives easier. The medical field in particular has benefited from technological advancements such as the da Vinci Robotic surgery system helping patients with kidney and prostate care. At Urology Specialty Care, we focus our attention on urinary tract health in both men and women. The primary function of the urinary tract is waste removal and regulation of electrolytes and acid-base homeostasis. When problems occur in the urinary tract, it might not be a grave life threatening issue, but it can cause plenty of discomfort, anxiety and embarrassment. Problems urinating, such as frequent urges or inability to go have long been treated with the use of a catheter. However, catheters are not the most easy to use invention, particularly for those who do it on a regular basis outside of the hospital or doctor’s office.

This brings us back to technology, as catheters are one of the areas of medicine which have received significant upgrades in recent years. One of the most useful inventions is called the SpeediCath, which is designed specifically for women. Not only is the catheter extremely discreet, it’s only about the size of a lipstick tube before use, but it makes the whole process much easier for those who use catheters frequently. It was designed for women only and is very safe and easy to operate. Inside the tube, a saline solution makes waiting for pre-hydrating a thing of the past. This makes the whole process much quicker as there are less steps.

Check out the video below for a closer look at how the SpeediCath is put together. Urology Specialty Care is proud to offer SpeediCaths to our patients, that’s why we’re known as the urology center of excellence in Miami, FL. Schedule an appointment today to find out if the SpeediCath is right for you.

Watch the video to find out more about how SpeediCath works.

Meet the Best Urologists in Miami

Posted on March 19, 2013 by Cosme Gomez

Urology is a specific medical field which focuses on the urinary tract health of both men and women. Urologists mainly deal with the kidneys, bladder, urethra and male reproductive organs such as the prostate and testes. Many people visit their family practice when they have health issues involving any of these organs, but really they should consider going to a urologist right off the bat. Issues like kidney stones, bladder or urinary tract infections and even cancer of the prostate or kidneys are all best handled by a professional in the field of urology. Those looking for a urologist in Miami, FL are generally looking for a practice with a reputation for being a urology center of excellence. One such practice, called Urology Specialty Care, is led by three very knowledgeable doctors who are committed to helping their patients with their urological health, but also their general wellbeing. Doctors Cosme Gomez, Robert Puig and Yekutiel Sandman are all experts in the field of urological health and they go out of their way to provide the patients of Urology Specialty Care with the highest quality care.

Dr. Gomez is a recognized expert in the field of prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment. Even though it’s the second most fatal form of cancer in men, prostate cancer is one of the slowest growing cancers there is. It’s very difficult to diagnose prostate cancer in its early stages because it is such a slow process. Usually men are well into their later years when a diagnosis is made. Many confuse the symptoms of BPH, a medical condition where the prostate shrinks, with the symptoms of cancer because they are so similar.

Dr. Puig is an expert when it comes to one of the most advanced pieces of robotic surgery equipment in use today. The da Vinci Surgical System is a remote controlled robot which allows for the most precise surgery. Dr. Puig uses a computer to guide the machine as it performs a variety of procedures on the patient. Robotic arms equipped with scalpels and scissors can make precise cuts with more accuracy than even the best surgeons. Not only are the incisions more precise, but they are also smaller and feature less pain and discomfort with a quicker healing time.

Dr. Sandman’s specialty is the management of kidney stones and kidney cancer, as well as conducting surgeries with the da Vinci System. Kidney stones are small calcium build ups in the kidneys which are flushed via the urinary tract. Usually these stones are very small and the person is not aware of them. However, when a kidney stone grows larger, it can cause severe pain and discomfort for a patient. There are several treatment options for kidney stones depending on the patient and their history with kidney stones.

Urology Specialty Care has a reputation for being the best Urology clinic in Miami, FL. Three wonderful doctors who care about their patients at a profound level make the practice one of excellence in South Florida. Call today for an appointment!

Book Recommendation: “Heart Attack Proof” by Dr. Michael Ozner

Posted on March 8, 2013 by Cosme Gomez

The best urologists in Miami understand that their field is only a part of what keeps a human healthy. The bladder and kidneys are vitally important parts of your body, but just as important is the heart, brain and every other organ. It makes no sense to focus on urological health while ignoring other practices which could help the rest of your body. The top urologists at Urology Specialty Care in Miami have a vested interest in the overall health of their patients. That’s why they’ve included a special section on their webpage dedicated to books written by accomplished doctors across many different medical fields. The most recent book recommendation was one entitled “Heart Attack Proof,” by noted Cardiologist and Miami resident Dr. Michael Ozner.

Dr. Ozner’s book is a guide to help someone reduce the risk of heart disease or even stroke. The most compelling aspect of the book is Dr. Ozner’s ability to convey complex medical studies and scientific analysis in a way that is both informative and entertaining for the regular person. The book is aimed at helping a person prevent a heart attack by addressing the root causes. Dr. Ozner succinctly lays out optimal weight control techniques, foods to avoid, the best exercise plans and even ways to reduce stress in your life. All of Dr. Ozner’s suggestions come with a well laid out argument for how it will help and why it will be effective. If you’re looking for a great book to entertain you as well as teach you something new, then Dr. Ozner’s is for you.

The tips in Dr. Ozner’s book are incredibly helpful for not just those who have a high risk for heart problems, but for anyone who wants to take steps to living a healthier, stress free life. If you like “Heart Attack Proof,” check out Dr. Ozner’s other books; “The Miami Mediterranean Diet” and “The Great American Heart Hoax.” Check back for more book recommendations from the Urology center of excellence in Miami, FL.

Best Urologist Miami, FL; Kidney Stones are the Worst

Posted on February 8, 2013 by Cosme Gomez

There’s been some debate about the most painful thing a person can experience. Women are quick to say childbirth and it’s hard to argue with them. One thing that should be in consideration for the most painful experience is kidney stones. Also called renal calculus in the medical community, kidney stones are a matrix of crystals that forms in the kidneys. The crystals are excess dietary minerals such as calcium that are found in urine and collected in the urinary system. They are usually small enough to pass through the urinary tract without causing any pain or irritation. Sometimes however, the stones can reach 3 millimeters in size and that’s when things get ugly. If you’re suffering from kidney stones, you’re probably in the market for the best urologist in Miami, FL. The best urologists, like those at Urology Specialty Care in Miami, can treat kidney stones with the most up to date and non-invasive techniques.

There are a few symptoms of kidney stones but there’s really only one that matters. Ask anyone who’s gone through it and they’ll say it was complete agony. The pain is so severe that it even has a name, renal colic. Such intense pain brings about other symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and sweating. The pain is caused by the stone working its way through your urinary system. Don’t think the stone is smooth either, they’re actually quite angular and sharp, nothing you’d want going through your system. The pain comes in spurts which usually last between 30 and 60 minutes. Then it subsides until the next round of pain. It’s like having a ticking time bomb inside of you that can go off at any point.

Kidney stones have been a problem for ages. It’s rumored that famous people like Napoleon, Benjamin Franklin, Isaac Newton, and Lyndon B. Johnson all suffered from kidney stones. For thousands of years, humans have practiced lithotomy, which literally translates to “stone cut” in Greek. The procedure was just as it sounds; cut somebody open and remove the stone. As you can imagine, cutting open vital organs back in 400 BC was a risky maneuver that resulted in more than a few deaths. Treatment for kidney stones is quite different today. There are many different treatment options, some of which involve lasers, shock waves, and even air pressure to break up stones. For difficult stones, surgery is still an option and you can be sure the survival rates are much higher these days. Kidney stones are a great reason to find the best urologist in Miami, FL. Places like Urology Specialty Care are experienced in diagnosing and treating kidney stones.

Urologist in Miami, FL: Cranberry Juice and Urinary Tract Infections.

Posted on January 23, 2013 by Cosme Gomez

We’ve all heard the term “old wives tale” before. It refers to stories that are generally regarded as myths or urban legends. Like if you go outside with wet hair you’ll catch a cold or shaving makes hair grow back faster and thicker. Some of these tales have foundations in truth, but many aren’t very reliable. One such old wives tale that has been passed around is that drinking cranberry juice is a surefire cure for a urinary tract infection. Most people think that they don’t need to visit their urologist in Miami, FL because drinking a big glass of cranberry juice will be just as effective. Think again.

A UTI is a simple infection of the bladder and urinary tract. While they are usually not life threatening, they can be the source of significant pain and discomfort for a few days. A lot of people think that cranberry juice is a solution for a UTI, but while the cranberry does have urinary health benefits, it is not as effective as you might think.

Cranberries are a popular little berry often found in juices, jams, and sauces. It’s widely thought that drinking cranberry juice not only helped prevent urinary tract infections, but also worked to cure them. Recent studies have shown that while cranberry juice does help with a UTI, its benefits have been widely overblown.

Cranberries contain an enzyme called flavanol which has infection fighting properties. Flavanol is known for preventing bacteria from sticking to cells in the urinary tract. However, a person would have to drink a lot of cranberry juice for it to make any difference at all. How much you ask? Try a couple of gallons a week over an extended period of time. There are cranberry pills which can be found in the nutrition aisle of most supermarkets, but it hasn’t been proven that they are any more effective than the juice.

As for cranberry juice helping cure a UTI? Most doctors chalk that up to simple liquid intake. Drinking a lot of any kind of juice will be beneficial for someone with a urinary tract infection. Increasing your fluid intake not only helps keep you hydrated by will also work to flush out the infection. Cranberry may be the popular choice due to the myth, but orange or apple juice will be just as beneficial.

As with any kind of illness, the best course of action is always to visit your doctor. For bladder and kidney health, your best bet is finding a urologist in Miami, FL with a reputation for excellence, such as the doctors at Urology Specialty Care.

Best Urologist Miami, FL: Understanding the da Vinci Surgical System

Posted on January 7, 2013 by Cosme Gomez

Popular science fiction during the mid-20th century predicted that the new millennium would bring us flying cars, robot butlers, and a colony on the moon. These predictions may not have been completely accurate, but our technological advancements are nothing to scoff at. The medical field in particular has progressed in leaps and bounds when it comes to diagnosis, medication, and surgical techniques. One of the most eye opening advancements is the use of robotics and computers assisting a surgeon during an operation. The crown jewel of robotic surgery is without a doubt the da Vinci Surgical System, which is named for the great Leonardo da Vinci who is widely credited with inventing the first robot. The system is difficult to learn and operate, thus only the best urologist in Miami, FL, such as those at Urology Specialty Care, have the expertise to use it.

The da Vinci System consists of four robotic arms, three of which hold instruments such as scalpels or scissors, the fourth containing an endoscopic camera. The arms are controlled by a surgeon via computer. The advantage of the robotic arms is that they work to minimize the areas of surgery which are most influenced by surgeon error. The robotic arms are steadier than the human hand and the wrist-like design can mimic human motion with the surgical instruments. The system cannot, however, operate on its own. It relies on the skill of a doctor to know exactly what incisions to make. It simply improves the precision of each action which normally would be conducted by the surgeon. Advocates of the da Vinci System argue that the robot conducts surgeries with more precision, smaller incisions, minimized blood loss, less pain, and a faster healing time.

The da Vinci System is often used by urologists when conducting prostatectomies to diagnose things such as prostate cancer.  Prostate biopsies are difficult to conduct as the prostate is not located in an easily accessible place within the body. Urologists using the da Vinci System can be more precise when performing a prostate biopsy. If you’re not the best urologist in Miami, FL then you may not have a da Vinci System on hand. Some urology centers, such as Urology Specialty Care, have multiple doctors who have the necessary experience to operate using a robotic system. Dr. Robert Puig and Dr. Yekutiel Sandman are both highly qualified in operating the da Vinci System. Dr. Puig is experienced with prostate cancer surgery and Dr. Sandman specializes in kidney cancer surgery. This is the mark of an excellent urology center.

The future of robotic surgery looks bright thanks to the recent technological advancements like the da Vinci System. Current efforts in the industry are to decrease the size of robotic surgical systems and also to increase the types of surgery in which they can be utilized. Who knows what the future will bring!
